A recent discovery of buried treasure in a Hindu temple in the south of India is causing quite a stir. The incredible stash of gold coins, gold statues, diamonds and precious stones is still being inventoried, but reports are that the final tally of this treasure’s value will easily be in the tens of billions of dollars.
Now the question becomes: What’s to be done with all that wealth? In a country where half a billion people live in devastating poverty and millions more are just on the edge of sliding in, the knee jerk reaction is that the new-found riches should be used to help the poor.
But many people are wary of allowing the government to have control over this huge stash. Given the level of corruption in India’s government and the propensity of governments in general to mismanage just about everything, that seems a legitimate concern.
Let’s hope and pray that somehow this treasure will be used to bring long term solutions for the poor and to make India a better place for everyone.
Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
