Currently 2.4 million Indians are HIV positive. Those who suffer the most from this pandemic are children. Some contract the disease from their mothers at birth and are forced to deal with the disease at a young age. Other children affected by the virus must drop out of school in order to care for sick and dying parents, raise younger siblings, or earn money to make up for lost wages. Those who are orphaned are thrown onto the street and into the worst forms of child labor.

The children of AIDS patients are in dire need of financial support due to their parent’s loss of health and in most cases employment. Fishhook identifies able family members to care for children, instead of isolating them in orphanages that are overrun by children and understaffed. In order to live with family members your support is needed. All funds are managed by the AIDS clinic social workers, who take each child for school enrollment and hand out supplies to the families during regular house visits. In addition to maintaining family ties, Fishhook sets aside $5 of each monthly donation in a savings account the child can use after high school to either further their education, start a business, or be accepted in marriage with a dowry fund.
