Amy Carmichael Home

The Home provides food, shelter and a safe haven for destitute women who have been disowned by their families or thrown out of their homes.

Started in 1998, the Amy Carmichael Home is a ministry that seeks to live out the Holy Spirit’s instructions found in James 1:27:

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”

The Home, which is located in Turicorin, Tamil Nadu, provides food, shelter and a safe haven for destitute women who have been disowned by their families or thrown out of their homes. Some of them were rescued from sexually abusive situations. At any given time about thirty women live in this Home under the care of a Residence Supervisor.

In 2006 the Home was able to move from its rented facility into a house built on property provided through gifts from generous donors. The modest, new facility has a kitchen, a living area and one large sleeping room to accommodate all the residents. Here the older women sleep on cots and the younger women sleep on mats on the concrete floor. The Home sits on a small plot of land where they keep a couple of cows and a flock of chickens to help supplement their food supply. Sometimes there is enough milk and eggs to sell, so this income can help supply the needs of the women in the Home.

Women from all stages of life have been rescued from a life on the streets and brought into the Home. The reasons these and other women find themselves without a place to live or means of support are varied. A look at some of their testimonies will give you a glimpse of the crisis these women face in a society where there is virtually no security net outside of Christian ministries.

Testimonies

CCM Amy Carmichael

Gloria, age 21

“I come from a Hindu family. I lost my parents when I was a child. I became an orphan, and our relatives were not willing to take care of me. I was abused by people, and I wanted to end my life many times. But as God had chosen me as His child, all my attempts to end my life failed. God brought me to the Amy Carmichael Home through one of His believers. Here I have accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. He has healed all my hurts and given me joy, peace and hope. I thank Him with all my heart.”

Mary, age 71

“My husband deserted me one month after our marriage. Because of paralysis, I was not able to use my arms and legs well. Nobody was willing to take care of me. By God’s grace I was accepted in the Amy Carmichael Home where I am loved and given proper care. I thank God for providing me a home.”
