Partnering with India’s Gospel Servants

Sewing Training

Every year about 80 women receive seamstress training free of charge through this six month program.

Extreme poverty and the related issue of illiteracy are problems that continue to plague India. A few statistics demonstrate the extent of the need:

  • About 42% of the Indian population lives below the poverty line according to the World Bank..
  • The 2001 Census of India says the literacy rate among women in rural India is only 46%.

A Pathway Out of Poverty

One of Gospel Friends’ responses to India’s poverty is the Sewing Training Program conducted on the Mt. Zion campus. In this six month program, women are taught the skills of a seamstress free of charge. At the completion of the training, each woman receives the gift of a new sewing machine. Every year about 80 women are trained in this program. With new skills and a sewing machine, these women are equipped to earn a decent living for their families. Thus, these families are given a pathway out of the cycle of poverty.

Partner with Us

The Sewing Training Program provides a concrete and viable way for people to provide better lives for themselves and their children, but it does not happen without the support of friends from around the world. Each sewing machine costs $100. So for less than you probably spend on your cable bill for two months service, you can enable an Indian family to break out of poverty for a lifetime. It sounds too easy to be true, but it can happen If you would like to give $80 for the purchase of a sewing machine, please click the yellow Donate button on this page.
